5 christmas movie musts.
Happy Holidays!
I love this time of year. Eating good food, spending time with family and friends (although limited right now) and staying warm and cozy inside watching the snow fall is something I look forward to every year! To me, it’s the best way to bring the year to a close and get ready for the one ahead.
My absolute favourite way to get into the spirit is by watching Christmas movies! I’ve always found them to be so joyful and heartwarming. While there are so many to choose from, I do have a few go-tos.
In no particular order, here are my top 5!
Columbia Pictures
The Holiday
I love me a good Nancy Meyers flick and this one is no exception. I’ve watched it year after year since it’s release in the early 2000’s.
If you don’t know the story, Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz’s characters swap homes for the holidays and romance and comedy ensues!
But seriously, who wouldn’t want to go to England for the holidays and fall in love with Jude Law?!
The Christmas Chronicles
This is actually a more recent holiday film that I just watched and really enjoyed!
Kurt Russell. As Santa. Enough said right?
Honestly though, it reminds me of 90’s classics like The Santa Clause. It has a similar sort of feel and I haven’t seen a Christmas movie of that quality in a long time.
Netflix
20th Century Fox
Home Alone
Starring Macaulay Culkin and Catherine O’Hara (yes, that one Schitt’s Creek fans!), this was one Christmas movie that I somehow missed growing up.
I still don’t know how the McCallister clan managed to fly their entire family out to Paris for Christmas but this film has quickly become one of my all time favourites!
A John Hughes classic. Always and forever.
Miracle on 34th Street
Admittedly, I haven’t seen the original 1947 version yet but that’s probably because I love the 1994 one so much!
I’d always make my mom watch it with me the night before Christmas and wished I could be in New York City during the holidays!
Also, pretty sure Dylan McDermott in this was my first crush. So hunky.
20th Century Fox
Universal Pictures
Love Actually
So… this one is quite the divisive movie. Either you love it or you hate it. Like, really hate it. I personally I love it. The cast is fantastic (Alan Rickman! Emma Thompson! BILL NIGHY!) and I love a good ensemble film that ties the storylines together to create a cohesive message.
Equal parts charming and heart-breaking (Emma’s scene in the bedroom anyone?) this is a great movie about love.
Also, it’s quite funny!
Bonus: How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Who would have thought that a live action remake of How the Grinch Stole Christmas would work?
Not 8 year old me.
Enter Jim Carrey and Ron Howard and I was easily proven wrong. I can’t imagine any one else playing the Grinch so perfectly!
The film is hilarious and if you haven’t seen it already, rectify that immediately.
Universal Pictures
Whether you prefer animated or Hallmark, corny or classic, there’s nothing like a Christmas movie to get you ready for the holidays!
